Survey finds 8 strange phenomena in divorce

The high divorce rate makes married people no longer confident that they will grow old together. Data released by the U.S. Demographic Yearbook show that divorce rates in the United States and Europe have remained high for a long time, and divorce rates in Asian countries represented by South Korea and China have also been rising. At the same time, more and more scientific research on divorce is being conducted in various countries.

1. Divorce at a young age is more harmful to health

Researchers from the University of Michigan's Marriage Research Institute conducted a 15-year follow-up survey of 1,282 married couples. The results showed that people who divorce before the age of 30 will have a worse lifestyle and are more likely to develop bad habits such as alcoholism and staying up late, and their health is also more likely to have problems. Older people, on the other hand, are better able to handle stress and accept change after divorce, and their health is less affected.

2. 80% of divorces are said by women

Swedish scientists have found that women carry a gene that makes them more willing to make changes when their marriages encounter difficulties. Statistics released by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs also show that when problems arise in a marriage, women are not as patient as people think. In all divorce cases, 80% are initiated by women.

3. Divorce is more expensive for the poor

Research from Ohio State University in the United States shows that more and more couples are choosing to separate because they "cannot afford divorce." The researchers followed 7,272 couples between 1979 and 2008 and found that the worse the economic situation of the couples, the more they feared divorce, because issues such as raising children and repaying mortgages would make their lives more difficult.

4. Both parents will affect the marriage

A 26-year study conducted by the University of Michigan in the United States shows that when a husband has a close relationship with his parents-in-law, the chance of divorce is reduced by 20%; and when a wife has a closer relationship with her parents-in-law, the chance of divorce is increased by 20%. This phenomenon is particularly evident in Asian countries. Because many wives think that their parents-in-law's entry into their lives is nosy, while husbands often don't feel much about their parents-in-law entering their lives.

5. People who don’t like to talk are more likely to get divorced

A study from the University of Cambridge in the UK found that silence is more harmful to a marriage than arguing all day. People who are quiet will choose to escape when they encounter problems, which will weaken the relationship between husband and wife and bring fatal harm to the marriage.

6. Women who work long hours are more likely to get divorced

Research published in the European Economic Review shows that for every 12 minutes a week a woman works, her risk of a marriage breaking up increases by 1%. Because working longer hours will make a woman feel that she is very independent and it doesn't matter if there are problems in her marriage.

7. Unreasonable distribution of housework can easily destroy a marriage

Norwegian scientists have found that unreasonable distribution of housework may increase the divorce rate by 50%. On the contrary, one person taking care of the housework alone can actually improve the quality of the marriage. However, in real life, experts still recommend that couples negotiate and complete housework together. At the same time, it is important to learn to thank and praise.

8. Couples who successfully date online have a lower divorce rate

"Today, it's no longer a strange thing for people to date online, and the prospects for online dating are quite optimistic. This result was a bit unexpected to me," said John Cacioppo, a professor of social psychology at the University of Chicago. The survey counted 20,000 American couples who got married between 2005 and 2012. The results showed that 35% of couples met online, and 6% of them divorced. In comparison, 8% of couples who met offline divorced, a higher divorce rate. (Compiled and edited by Xiaomi)
