How does the subdermal contraceptive implant work?

Nowadays, due to the influence of foreign culture, many young people have become more open-minded, so we often see them changing boyfriends and girlfriends very frequently. Because of this, accidental pregnancies are very common. Almost all of the women queuing up for abortions in hospitals every day are young people. In fact, contraception is not as troublesome as you think. For example, you can get a subcutaneous contraceptive implant. So, how does the subcutaneous contraceptive implant work?

Subcutaneous contraceptive implant is a new contraceptive method that is currently being promoted and used throughout the world. This contraceptive method is to put a certain dose of progesterone in a silicon capsule tube, and then bury the tube under the skin, so that it slowly releases a small amount of progesterone, thereby playing a contraceptive role.

In 1984, my country introduced the subcutaneous implant contraceptive method, which was first used in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenyang. Currently, 15 provinces and cities across the country have established subcutaneous implant clinical trial centers to perform subcutaneous implant contraceptive surgery. According to relevant statistics, the pregnancy rate within 2 years is only 0.1%, and the pregnancy rate within 3 years is 0.24%.

principle

Subcutaneous contraceptive implants achieve the purpose of contraception by changing the viscosity of cervical mucus, preventing sperm from entering the uterine cavity; inhibiting the growth of the endometrium, which is not conducive to the implantation of the fertilized egg; and inhibiting ovarian ovulation.

How to operate

Subcutaneous contraceptive implant surgery is usually performed within 7 days of the onset of menstruation or at the same time as an artificial abortion. The operation is simple. A small incision is made on the inside of the upper arm of the contraceptive user. Six silicon capsule tubes are pushed into the subcutaneous tissue (arranged in a fan shape) through the incision using a special trocar. The operation is then completed. The incision does not need to be sutured and the entire operation can be completed in a few minutes. The latest implants only require single implantation.

There may be local bruising and swelling within a few days after the operation. No treatment is required in this case, as it will disappear on its own after a few days. If the wound bleeds, becomes infected, or the silicone capsule tube falls out, seek medical attention immediately. You can have sexual intercourse 24 hours after the operation.

A set of silicone capsule tubes is implanted to provide contraception for 5 years, at which time they are removed. If you need to continue using this method of contraception, you can re-implant a set of silicon capsule tubes; if you are planning to have a baby, take out the silicon capsule tubes six months before the planned pregnancy. During this period, you can use condoms or topical contraceptives for contraception.

During the period of subcutaneous implant contraception, if amenorrhea, irregular vaginal bleeding, and lower abdominal pain occur, you should see a doctor immediately to check whether you are pregnant. However, most women have a favorable bleeding pattern. In clinical study evaluations, an average of 6.7% of women reported frequent bleeding, defined as >5 episodes of bleeding/spotting within a 90-day reference period. When irregular bleeding occurs and after the doctor's examination, it is confirmed that the patient is not suitable for the subcutaneous implant, the implant should be discontinued, but the probability is only about 10%. One possible adverse event with virtually any hormonal contraceptive is irregular bleeding.
